Why do so many people in foreign countries that don’t have democracy which are also being oppressed by dictators, get so aggressive against the Western World, which wants to spread our way of life (i.e. not living in fear all the time etc.)

What you call "our way of life" in reality is domination over these unfortunate people. Have you ever heard of colonialism? Western countries the US as the prime example aligns with these dictators and assists in the domination of the poor in the form of capitalistic enslavement by participating in the slave factoriess in china producing nearly all the products we use. Then we sell back to them at an inflated cost, the very products they made! Who is to blame? Democracy and the people you elected. Wise up turn off the TV capitalist propaganda . As for not living in fear well you better fear and get your head out of the sand before its too late. News flash you don't live in a democracy anymore.

Read "Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny" by Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen please. The book is a rare sensible piece of writing. It seems like even Harvard is having second thoughts on American superiority complex which have being prevailing for so long. This book might be a bit hard for both the "westerners" and the "Islamist" to digest, but I hope your stomach is healthy. I am so moved, Nobel prize winners have seem so much, but they have yet being disenchanted by humanity. I do have some opinion on this book though. Although Mr Sen profess he takes a neutral stance, I think he is slightly off the equilibrium, otherwise, he probably cannot survive in an American institute.

I think the question is deeply flawed, and overly general. First, there are a lot of democratic countries where there is a strong anti-north american or anti-european feeling. These countries don´t particularly need to be taught by the USA. Take Latin America, for example, democracies that fell partly due to the active participation of the CIA include Chile, Guatemala and many others. They don´t want us to spread our way because the USA way is not peaceful, is not just, and does not respect other cultures. It is so important to find out about the rest of the world, it is not just "the west" versus "dictatorships".

In response to your question, i think it is important to understand how the people being invaded must feel. Though mabye it is true that their way of government is actually causing them to live in fear, it does not mean that they want to change it. Could you imagine, during the revolutionary war, if France had come to America and forced them to become free. France could of easily wanted this because during this time peroid in history, France and England were not on the best terms, and if England had to fight another war, it could of been good for France. Now regardless wether you believe that the wars in the Middle East are for oil gain and profit or really just for the cause of freedom is a choice you have probably already made. I personal question why America is in the middle east when there are countries like North korea threatening them. So is the war really for the cause of freedom?

Each countries have their own history and got to what they are today. Invasion doesn't only come in the form of physical but also conceptual. War is a physical force, brainwashing is also a kind of invasion and depriving others, taking advantages of countries in poor situation is a tranparent force too. Your question has several elements: other countries, dictators, aggressiveness against the spread of democracy from the Western World. Can you figure out the cause and effect between them? There are all kinds of possibilities depending on which foreign country you are referring to. Some are being invaded by "Western World" and hence, need a powerful man which you see as a "dictator". That's one possibility. Telling others to accept capitalism in order to receive aid from us can be business or blackmailing. Depends on your viewpoint. One thing: democracy is not the absolute way to peace and may not be the only way.

Those people are angry because the U.S. government is not recognizeing the sovereignty of they're leaders. Maybe they value other things over the almighty dollar. Americans do not. The best way to lead is by example. The best way to spread democracy is for we the citizens to use democracy to fix the problems here at home. Until our country is perfect we have no right to force feed our way of life to people who have entirely different cultures and values than our own. Americans our the ones who are living in fear! A fear created by an administration that uses it to fullfill its aggenda- domination and profit.

First of all you have to review if you're living in a real democracy, and if all the guarantees are given (talkin about freedom of speech, free press, access to education, right to vote, etc.). Second, dictators aren't only in non-democratic countries. A president who owns an "automatic majority" in parliament and manipulates the press can easily be called a dictator. Third, they just get agressive because they didn't had the right to choose if they they wanted western world in their backyards. All cultures are diferent, and all of them have to be respected. Why do you think our way of life is so good? why do you think our way of life is better than theirs? whit all the social problems, the inequality, the ecological, the weapons market... i'm giving you many reasons of why this is not the greatest way to live our lives. And finally, in this wide world... who is not afraid?

Although I am not as learned as some of the individuals in this forum, I will attempt a short answer. I am originally from Central America, and have seen firsthand the extreme poverty and inequality in some nations. You see, the United States is a hegemon, this means that it controls politics and other spheres of influence, through what is usually a mutually beneficial agreement or interest with the nations which would fall under this control... Yet this does not mean that the PEOPLE within these sovereign states reap the benefits. Throughout history the "west" has attempted to impose its viewpoints on other parts of the globe, other civilizations; sometimes with benevolence at the head, sometimes because of pure economic, territorial, political interest. Many of these experiments have failed, for a number of reasons; you cannot impose democracy on a people (also interesting to note that there are no true democracies in the world, most regimes are based on this concept but most, including the United States, are republics) you cannot institute development of nations without taking the local viewpoints into consideration; you cannot instill a sense of trust and cooperation with the west, when the people of these nations are also failed by the corruption and greed of their leaders, something all too common throughout the Third World and throughout history. If you lived in Morocco, Lybia, Tunisia, you would as a matter of course know that the west (in the form of France, Italy, Great Britain etal) ruled your nation for decades or centuries. If you were a Palestinian, you would know that the state of Israel was created from territory which formerly belonged to Palestine. This in no way justifies violence. But it does cause animosity, mistrust, hatred, fanaticism. Human nature is very hard to control but very easy to corrupt... Look into history my friend, and you will find the answers you seek.

It surprises me to this day how ignorant some people are with regards to the war in for example Iraq. Many still think that Saddam Hussein is responsible for the 9/11 attacks and that he had stores of nukes hidden throughout Iraq. Go read a newspaper and figure out the truth. As for their "aggressiveness" towards the Western World, any and every country that faced with being invaded with guns, bombs, missiles and tanks would react with hostility, regardless the supposed reason behind it. They are losing their children, homes, businesses, stability, and even their culture and very way of life is threatened. Change is hard to come by as it is, but when it is forced upon you it is that much harder to accept. This society has no right to encroach on others because we believe our way is "right". Right how? The American government has a steady stream of propaghanda pumping into the minds of the people in hopes of keeping them afraid, and therefore keeping their support. We are far from right, so how can we tell anyone else to do it our way?

Eye live in a foreign democracy - Oz, land of the munchkins - and must utter this old chestnut; democracy is the worst system aside from all the rest. But to this must be added the proviso 'so far'. The democracy of Greece is not that of today. There are few people who actually act as representatives of their constituents. Party politics ensures that a form of demographic dictatorship prevails in western democracies, not real democracy. An electronic democracy based on voting for actual issues still lies in the future - a future in which the technocrats who run the voting system DON'T twist the outcome. Voting for issues instead of faces would change the planet. First, however, we need a truly democratic world governance - we could still call it the United Nationms IF the UN representatives were elected by the people of their countries (at last - a use for a head of state) and IF the insecurity council was also representative of world populations, not just power blocs. For me, as someone who is a citizen of a democratic country, the real problem is that the situation today is much like that of the old missionary mentality. In the days when missionary went to so called "heathen" countries it was understood that the imposition of cultural norms went hand in hand with spreading the Christian message. Thankfully, we now live in more enlightened times. However, we are still doing the same thing with democracy. This seems to be the new religion and that everything that comes with being a western democratic nation must also be imposed. The problem is though that which is the correct form of democracy? Is it one like the US where it seems that he who raises the most money becomes president? Is it like the UK that has a 1st past the post parlimentary system? Is it like much of Europe that relies on fragile coalitions in order to run the country? Western democratic nations want to bring in democracy believing that it leads to more stablility but if you look at the countries where it has been imposed they are far from stable!

Dear chris, if you want to make a lot of money or get a lot of power or even just be generaly successfull, democracy is the easiest way to get there. It is a whole lot easier to convince the average person of any good/weird idea you may have, than to convince everybody. The reason for this is , no matter what subject you choose, the average person is always a layman at best. This is a society of specialists, remember? So democracy allows you to convince everybody by means of convincing the average person. That is why there is no political strategy more open to corruption than democracy. Thats one fact. Here's another: Did you know that the most successfull policy ever practiced by humans as far as safety, peace, social behaviour and absence of war is concerned, was based on and incorporated interhuman ownership? (Read: slavery) Here's the nasty tail: They were Africans in an African society. Bites doesn't it? Nada democracy, just living in love and peace together. You want to be boss and take responsability, you become the owner. You dont want to cary the weight of responsability even over your own life, you become the slave. Its like what we have, but then honest and all the way. You cant fire a slave you know. Try and imagine, no wars....for thousands of years. Do you think Bush or anyone like him is ever going to let any Africans rule America, peace or no peace.? Yeah right... but maybe now you understand why so many people are so agressive. You see, they're sick and tired of not living the good live in the paradiselike world they could and should live and they blame us......and are right to do so. Still want to spread democracy or our way of life? Try remember this next time somebody ends his life by blowing himself up in someone elses frontyard. Its like an infection,....its supposed to ring a bell,.... but it doesn't. Good question thow. And ah...keep on asking those questions. Its the only way to overcome the part-time idiot that lures in the minds of all of us. Greetings, Berend

This couldn't possibly be a sincere question; I simply refuse to believe that anyone who would find themselves at this website would be so misguided and uniformed. I am shocked that this was brought to the table to waste the time of so many brilliant minds. The answer is eloquently given by Thenmozhi Soundararajan.

When the Bible says to be no part of the world (John 17) how can a Christian vote for figures in government? When the Bible says that God will destroy worldly governments in his coming Day of Judgement, how can a Christian support man made government of any kind in any way? When the Bible says to "learn war no more" and to "turn the other cheek", how can a Christian support a government by voting or running for office or pledging allegiance? Why do Christians not believe their own book and if they do believe, why do they not practice?

There are many answers to this question. I won't attempt to answer it but I will list other questions that this question begs: What makes Democracy the best solution? Why are American's so intent on insisting the world agree with them? Why does man dominate man? Are they really being oppressed? What kind of example has America set that should make the world want to follow? Aren't Democratic States in a dismal condition socially? Why does Christianity have to come with Democracy? Why do Christian governments profane their God? The Cristain God says to be no part of the world. Any government who claims the backing of God does not conform to the Bible. The world isn't resisting Democracy per se, they are resisting hypocrisy.
