at a very basic level, art is a form of expression, a way of communicating ideas to an audience from the creator, and anything that helps people think and talk, and to break down barriers between people is a great thing. no, its not going to stop wars or end violence and poverty, but it is a gateway for understanding. it lets people grasp concepts in ways that hadn't already known.

The creative process can make the artist a better person, and appreciating and understanding a work can make the viewer a better person. Not all painting, sculpture, music or writing, is art, much is produced strictly for profit or a grade, as in a class. Beware of the "Artist" who claims that the viewer must derive their own meaning from a work and will not discuse it. This is a sign that the "Artist" has no understanding of the work or has put no meaning into the piece. A good Artist is trying to make a statement and should be willing to help an interested person understand that meaning. Being obnoxiously rude is not helpful. Also beware of critics, being non productive, they are the least qualified to render an inteligent opinion on the art. The producer of the work is the only one who can truly explain the meaning.

Pablo Picasso "Art is a lie that makes us see the truth". Art can help us see what truly is and what isn't, the truth. That there would make a good question. What is truth?

Art is something of beauty. Art has many forms. Its so diverse. It won't cause harm. I find sometimes by just looking at a picture I feel some connection. Some images bring happiness. Music being an art form is great. It can relax or distract you from the rest of the world. Art won't do no harm, so why not?

A creative enviorment stimulates the creative self.Humans are artists by nature. What we call art is basicly comunication that can be more and more complex, the more creative the surroundings are the more sane people become, because they comunicate more behond words and basic feelings. All of us can give something unique and this really can erradicate violence, crime, poverty, dogmatic religion.Art make us understand more about ourselves and others in ways never before imagined.

Being a creative soul is what makes us human. With that, being "artistic" or creative can take a positive or negative course and the method of expression can be interpreted subjectively. Most "artists" cite that their expression is a way of processing the world around them, observing and incorporating their own personal perspectives on issues such as abortion, religion, war or love. We as humans have choices everyday to take a positive stance or a negative one. Learning about the artistic endeavors of others often introduces us to ideas we would have not encountered on our own through our own life experiences, so to answer the question: Yes, the Arts can make us better in that we are more aware of the individuality of others and the common threads that we as humans share. It's what we do with this knowledge that defines the outcome.

depends on what you call "the arts"

May 19, 2008 2:11:27 PM cite

I think this notion of art is being confused with creativity in the wider context of human nature. For many people in the world who live in poverty I doubt art serves the same purposes as those from the developed countries. Ofcourse people still need to express themselves for many different reasons. Some use it as a form of escapism, others for egotistical reasons. Merely being a "consumer" of arts or the arts does not make us better or worse. How we interpret such art depends on a wealth of socio-environmental issues and it is that interpretation that motivates our actions. The reason I would use the word "creativity" rather than "the arts" is because it is more general and allows participtation from everyone regardless of whether they are artistic (whatever artistic is). The ability to question our motivations and surroundings is a creative process - which allows us to develop/improve/adapt. And that, to me, is what makes us better.

"introduces us to ideas we would have not encountered on our own through our own life experiences". Or even re-introduces to us ideas and experiences we HAVE encountered, experiences we may actually share but weren't paying close enough attention. De'ja vu.

definitely. Art, no matter what form, is an expression of self. Whether it be music, drawing, (depending on your definition of art...) surfing, or writing...it develops the mind and soul.

Art creates our reality, the way we depict our world is what becomes of it. I think that there is negative artwork, artwork created like any other and can be beautiful but holds an apposing message of negative growth. Therefor if we put positive thought and intention into our art and the world around us then we can manifest a good life out of it. Going through the creative process makes us better and more in tuned with the universe.
