I sowed the idea of infinity in the unruffled soil of a wooden stool you see how nicely it grows -says the philospher rubbing his hands And indeed it grows like a beanstalk Another three or four seasons of infinity and it will outgrow even his head I also knocked together a cylinder -says the philosopher at the top of the cylinder a pendulum I am sure you see where this is going the cylinder is space the pendulum is time tick-tick-tick -says the philosopher and laughing loudly he flutters his little hands finally I came up with the word existence a hard colorless word you gather warm leaves with quick hands a long time you have to trample images call a sunset a phenomenon to discover under all of this the dead white philosopher's stone we now expect the philosopher to weep over this wisdom of his but he doesn't weep existence after all will not be moved space will not melt and time will not stand still in its insensate course

"truth" is something that a person believes. The question about "how a person can believe something?" can be explained by any expert from the fields of philosophy, religion, science (cognition science, neuroscience...), economics and any other one..... if you believe in what the expert says. :-), However any explanation can be proven wrong in next 50, 100 or 500 years. Only a few people can find out or construct "truth", and most human beings just live and follow the truth. I would like to suggest two questions rather the original one "what is truth". 1) how can I make undoubted "truth" and persuade (or force) people to believe it, so that I can achieve some objects. 2) how can I live with the truth? or how can I take advantage of the truth? when (if) I (must) believe the truth. the first question is for those "elite" people. the other one is for the people who can have few choices in his/her life.

There are many who claim that truth is changeable, and varies from one time to the next, and this is correct when the truth is based on belief that may be inconsistent. There are many such truths that pass in and out of fashion. There are some who hold that all truth is subjective, and this is a valid philosophic view of the world. These subjectivists believe that physical reality is but a manifestation of their intellect, and nothing outside of their mind has any real existance. These ideas are in sharp contrast with the objectivists, who accept the truth of physical reality and the constancy of the true facts based on observation and experimentation. Subjectivists say that everyone are like the occupants of Plato's cave, viewing only the shadows of things that are not real but are only the silhouettes held in front of a light to cast shadows on a wall. However these subjectivists first acknowledge the reality of the physical world and then seek to deny it. They will argue at great length to convince others of the fiction of the existence of anything or anyone outside of their own cognizant awareness. They attempt to convince everyone else that no one else exists. If as they say everything is but a product of their own mind and has no existance outside of their own awareness, who are they trying to convince? If I am but a product of someone else's imagination, they are arguing with themselves and trying to convince themselves of the truth of their own belief's. Indeed these beliefs must be false for if I and the rest of the world do not exist, why do they bother to acknowledge us. To say that there is no verifiable truth, or that truth is subjective is to deny the reality of the physical world, and claim that all is the product of someones mental activity. If reality is but a dream and we are only the product ov someone's mind then that person could learn to control their thoughts and we would all dance to their whims. I certainly do not feel in control and I do not accept that another is controling my actions. There are many true facts based on physical reality and only when the object of that truth ceases to exist will that truth be negated. Truth based on observation and experimentation does not change, that truth may become more detailed or refined over time but scientific principles are not changing as many seem to think. The laws of physics and nature are immutable and it is only the depth of our understanding that gives the appearance of change. Scientific theories are based on the data and knowledge available at any one time and as knowledge progresses these theories advance and become more precise and accurate. Scientific theories are like mathmatecal equations, change the variables and the answer will change, but the equation, like the theory, remain the same and is still used to provide the correct answer. The truth is there for thoese who will just look and see what is in front of them, but many are blind to the truth and refuse to believe what others have found. The truth is that meny have a romantic and poetic notion of the world and the reality of existance. The truth is that many will not accept the truth.

Unfortunately, most of humanity accepts whatever as truth as what their society believes. There are many, many exceptions, but they are seen as misinformed or ignorant.

This is an interesting twist on this thread, that those of subjective and objective thought are having a dialogue on truth and facts. There are some who argue that all perception is to be questioned and can only be validated by intellectual debate, and seek to determine the nature of reality by reason and thought alone. Counter to this are those who observe and record these perceptions, and when observation is consistent, use this to describe the nature of reality. Unfortunitly there is no middle ground for those who hold these opposing views of the world. The proponents of using reason and debate to acquire knowledge will probably not accept the findings of those who rely on observation and experimentation. And those who favor examination of the physical world will want to see concrete evidence. Dialogue is likely to be pointless as the debate would be at cross purposes and would achieve nothing, except that each side would validate their own view by accepting or rejecting, in turn, the evidence or arguments that are presented. Those who observe and record will continue to do so as there has been no valid evidence to disprove their findings, and those who look to cognition and debate will reject any findings based on the physical reality.

The only truth which exists is that all life on this earth is a symbiotic orchestra of harmonious being. All presupposed truth which humans have built over the course of thier existence is only truth when it abides by this ultimate truth.

Truth is the place where people store there useless facts. Facts are the place where they keep thier beliefs. beliefs are where people place faith in that what they dont understand.

Objective Truth is that "which accords with fact or reality", "an established or verified fact". Therefore truth is not subjective and not open to debate. In Philosophy and Religion, truth is made up of opinions that cannot be verified and are subjective. These are more properly refered to as beliefs.

Im not so sure there is such thing as an established or verified fact. All presupposed facts and knowledge has followed a path of human benefit. There is not any knowledge that exists which cannot be debated. Human knowledge exists as an ever-evolving dynamic force. Truth today may not be truth tommorrow. An example of this is gravity. Newtons law of gravity made sense and worked functionaly for human benefit. Physics was built around his law and many great and not so great things were produced as a result of this law. Then a 100 or so years later a man named Albert Einstein came along and cut this law's feet out from under it and his theory of general relativity evolved science, physics, and truth forever. Scientists are in some ways philosophers. There are many paths science can take and it is up to scientists to decide which paths we will take our knowledge along. A more practical example of the subjectivity of reality and knowledge was written in a work i had read by william james. William james is walking with a friend and comes to a large tree where a squirrel happens to be resting. William James walks around the tree while the squirrel backs up around the tree never taking its eyes off james. James then walks away and asks his friend if he had walked around that squirrel. And his friend replied yes you walked 360 degrees around that squirrel. James then replies to his friend that although it may appear he had walked around the squirrel, that squirrel could have made just a strong a case opposed to this and be convinced that i had never walked around him for i never left his eyes and surely never got around his acute awareness.

Truth by definition is subjective. What is called true by one person is perceived false by another. It can be considered that everything is both true and false as everything is but an illusion created by each individuals self delusion (Mara). It is Indian philosophy that all perceived by unenlightened individuals is illusion, illusions that we are constantly creating; one would rather see the world as one wishes to rather than as it naturally is. Wisdom and must be cultivated to see and understand what is true and false but when you become the constant gardener of your soul the truth will shine forth like a beacon to guide your way. The place to start is to strip away the veils of illusion before your eyes, the veils that you have chosen to wear. There is an answer but I cannot give it to you, it is to be found by you alone. I will give you a hint, what is truth or wisdom often comes off as nonsense and is discarded as useless by a greedy society. Nowadays who is not greedy? No wonder truth or wisdom is not easily found. Truths about the creations of man are but a sea of madness one may speculate that there is no truth there at all. However truths spoken by those who are enlightened are as a grain of rice strewn upon a beach of sand. But hey, I could be wrong but I doubt it. Billions of believers throughout thousands of years support this theory. Love and peace, Thai Sean
