It is not only because we prefer fantasy over reality (which is true). There are other reasons. As human beings, our brain is hardwired to make up excuses when our values conflict, and to make up reasons for our flaws or mistakes. It is called cognitive dissonance, and is the mechanism behind delusion.

we want to build ourselves up. the concept isn't that bad unless it is excessive and leads to hubris. lying is in our nature.

We lie to ourselves b/c we are afraid to see the truth. To accept truth for what it is, hurtful, raw and sometimes ugly. We lie to cover up our flaws by telling ourselves they ain't so bad. We lie to block out the truth of the world, to ignore the problems and to continue to live in a bubble of a world. We lie b/c it is easy, simple and fast and in todays culture whatever is the most self satisfying in the shortest amount of time is the most proper route of escape.
