Even for the religious there are no guarantees of a promising future. Although one may try hard to be a good person deserving of the Christian heaven there is the problem that the Christian god is wrathful, you may not have been as good as you have thought and get condemned to everlasting fire and brimstone whatever that is. So for some death is a scary thing but Buddhism for another example teaches that the two obstacles to overcome for a good life this time around and therefore the next too is to overcome desire and fear. Desire for unwholesome things and fear is worries, mental anxiety and just regular old fear including the fear of death. There is nothing to worry about there will be another life to work things out and perhaps you will improve if you try harder. But the reason for fear of death is obviously the fear that you have led a bad life, did some questionable things and are undeserving of a good future in heaven or wherever. This may be conscience if you know the difference between good or bad or fear of the unknown perils that perhaps await you. But the solution is conquering your fear and living a good life in harmony with this world and all the different species on it, for then you will have succeeded and there is no cause to fear for you have done your best and whatever happens you have improved and how can any god argue with that…

I often think of this when I see people praying for someone to continue living when the focus of their prayer is an individual who is clearly in pain. I think that it is not really a fear, but actually a reluctance to give things up and embrace change, even when that release would be the best outcome. On the other hand, if you only talk religious values but do not live them, you may fear the unknown because you don't know whether there is an "afterlife" where you might receive an unpleasant reception.

Just because a person may believe in heaven does not mean they believe they are worthy of it.
