Of course raising a child will give you valuable and rewarding new insights, but in a world as overpopulated as ours, your value may lie in your willingness to not succumb to mindless procreation.

To creating a better world. If you love your child, the child down the street and/or children in Zimbabwe, you have a stake into the future.

The value of a human is not determined by parental status. Each person has value and can contribute greatly to loved ones, communities and the world.

Growing up

Sep 8, 2011 7:22:48 PM cite

I think that growing up, more than anything, means figuring out who you are enough to be able to focus your energy outward. From this perspective, it is better for the community if one can grow up. I think the common conception that to be mature one must never act silly or have fun is completely wrong. Part of being grown up is laughing at yourself.

The importance should not be put on 'adults' molding children. The emphasis should be placed on the value of a child. Children are the future of this world; Children are our teachers. They will show us how they want the world to be, they will show is what is important. To be a valuable adult in the reference of children would be to contribute to the worlds future by listening to the rights of Children - whether they are 'yours' or not.

I'm big on looking at the world through an evolutionary perspective, and if you were to ask this question a decade or so ago, evolutionary theorist would probably say that by not fulfilling your role of 'passing your genes' onto to future generations, that you have no value. However, evolutionary theorists have incorporated more social values into their research today than ever before. Because of this, they are now are more commonly saying that humans have a such an advance social system, that altruism towards a society to help others propagate their genes is a crucially important factor in the survival of our species. So as I see it; no, you do not need a child to be a valuable adult; you just need to be a contributing member of society. I will warn you that people who were raised by stern traditional values may raise an eyebrow when you find out you don't want kids, but this judgement is minor, and shouldn't affect your life in anyway. All that really matters in the end is that you live your life healthily and happily the way you see fit, and don't let the standards of others try and change what you want to be.

I don’t think in a world that is overpopulated to the point of using up all its resources that adding another hungry mouth is valuable, so no is my answer.

But as someone already pointed out, it is going to come back to your definition of valuable. In my mind, someone can possess a great deal of value (to those around them) without ever having had a child. Especially in a world where we're outgrowing our ability to sustain ourselves.
