If we as humans consider ourselves intelligent beings, why is it that we don't seem to realize that we all many more similarities than differences?

From an early age on, people are constantly taught to stand out, to be different, to be unique. Apart from this however there seems to also be an inner need in people to look for difference rather than similarities in order to find their own identity. Thus I think it is much harder for everyone to take the step back and look at what we have in common with each other than to look at what our similarities are...
