If man has the power to create disease...

May 24, 2008 8:34:28 PM

Man as a whole is a curious mammal. Like electricity, bacteria and disease were something discovered. They were always present. But as technology developed, so did our curiosity, as well as greed. With people being greedy, it would be impossible for the multi-billion dollar drug companies to come up with cures. It would not be profitable. Medications, such as pain killers, do not help the situation but only the symptoms. I guess in a way it would be like taking a pain killer for a broken finger. The pain stops, but the finger is still broken. I guess the best way to understand what I am talking about, is to read the book Forbidden Knowledge. It helps put things in perspective.

born evil?

May 28, 2008 6:28:56 PM

It would depend on the point of view you wish to take. If you take it from the religious stand point, all of mankind when born are born with original sin. The only time of innocence would be in the womb. If you take it from the psychological side, it would be considered habits of learned behavior. Then you have the scientists who believe all traits can be linked to each parent by genetics. This question is a double barrel shotgun since “Evil” is something defined by religious belief and being “quick learners” revolve around scientific and psychological beliefs. My stand point on this is all of them combined. We were all born with original sin, but we all have this thing called “Free Will”. You can talk about all these situations where the baby is born into like alchohal and drugs, being rich, being poor, etc. I can cite at least one example of people who have chosen (Free Will) not to be apart of any given situation they were born into. We are all evil, it just depends on if we act. “Sin is not hurtful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it is hurtful” Benjamin Franklin

Knowldge and Wisdom

Jun 15, 2008 5:01:31 AM

“All this worldly wisdom was once the unamiable heresy of some wise man.” Henry David Thoreau Knowledge is something acquired through time. Studies increase your knowledge. Take droppingknowledge.com as an example. People come and put their “Knowledge” to use that they learned through reading, listening, and learning. Now that knowledge, is passed on further down the line. Does that make you a Wiseman because you know something? The smartest people talk but say nothing. We can talk about traits of people we consider wise. Some traits are patience, peaceful, intelligent, caring, etc. Are these traits learned? Would that be considered knowledge of life? Wisdom of Life? The bigger picture of things, not breaking things down into catergories, leaves me to believe wisdom is nothing more than ripened knowledge. The wisest man alive would tell you that he is still learning. The difference between the two? Nothing. Wisdom is simply the teacher and knowledge is the pupil.

Only Three?

Jun 15, 2008 11:27:45 PM

Innocence, Patience, and respect. The innocence to help see things how they are. Innocent curiosity never killed the cat. Patience to see the innocence that exists. Respect to all even when you find out that innocence does not exist. There are many values that should be instilled. I feel with these three, it helps build the foundation of finding the others. One doesn’t out weigh the other though.

A proverb

Jun 15, 2008 11:54:29 PM

Hi April, This is actually a bible verse (Ecclesiastes 1:18) from the new world translation. Maybe knowledge is a vexation because you can’t change things? I know in verse 15 of the same chapter the congregator states, “That which is made crooked cannot be made straight, and that which is wanting cannot possibly be counted.” I think, in my own whacked out interpretation of the bible, the he knows too much to be able to change things. That maybe the others won’t comprehend it, or believe it, and that causes him, or others, pain. I guess I would look at it like a child and a candle. The parent knows that if the child puts his finger in the flame, it will hurt and burn. The child can’t understand that so he/she does it anyway and gets burned/hurt.

Admired?

Jun 25, 2008 12:49:17 AM

My first instinct after reading this question is to tell you to go to Canada if you don’t like it. But that would be the stereotypical American who is proud of living here. I would also like to add at this juncture that there is nothing wrong with Canada. I agree with you that there are some ideas that were brought over to the states from our European counter parts. Everything everywhere though, was influenced by something. Take music for an example. There are no original riffs or beats in any song. Is it time to criticize music? I am assuming though that you live either here in America, or another developed country that provides you the commodity of a computer and internet. I invite you to live in China. There the government regulates the amount of children who can have. Maybe Zimbabwe? You can be displaced because of gorilla warfare. Or maybe some of the middle eastern countries where dogs get treated better than women? I am not saying that America doesn’t have its own junk in the backyard. But some people would rather put up with that then get burned alive because of what religion they are. Wouldn’t you agree? America was built on the American Dream. By the way Ace, if there was a country that didn’t discriminate, that would probably be the dream place to be.

Equality

Feb 16, 2009 12:16:34 AM

Equality is a funny thing. Society as a whole is driven by success. It doesn’t matter where you go in this world. Everybody is trying to out perform somebody, or something. You hear things like, “Money is Power.”. Which means equality in an economy such as ours, does not, and will not exist. Social equality is a social state of affairs in which all people within a specific society or isolated group have the same status in a certain respect. Even with this, the definition previously stated, used by many practicing law, “Money is Power.”. The only way equality is going to be achieved, in any economic situation, is to treat a human as a human. Strip down a man’s riches and you have somebody no better than a “beggar” on the corner. Who may at one time in his/her life, had the riches all of us yearn for. In a shorter version, the only equality we will ever have in this world, is that we are all human.

Chemistry

Dec 5, 2009 8:15:52 PM

Mental Illnesses come about by a chemical imbalance, misfiring neurons, or any other mal-formation of the brain. The medications given, depending on the diagnosed illness, regulates the chemicals needed, and sometimes adds the elements needed to function as a "normal" person in society. Dosage of the medication is important as well. If you have a too high of dosage, it can cause an adverse effect from what you wanted. If it is too low, there is no progress in "normalizing" the patient. It would be hard to go into detail about how they work and what mental illness is what. There are simply too many. There is no definition as to what causes it. It can be caused from fetal damage, to envriomental causes, to genetics, and you can't forget substance abuse. Normally, there is an interview process that takes place to help determine these things, so something that may cause something from one, may not cause something for another. If anything, i would make a trip down to the local library for more information.

science

Dec 6, 2009 8:38:55 PM

Anything can be explained by science. That is why there is no sense of bewilderment anymore. In this case, sometimes it is a learned behavior from our enviroment. This is why they say domestic violence repeats itself if children are involved. There are attributes that can be explained by disecting parts of the brain and theory such as thai sean explained as well. The common factor of all violent issues are stemmed mostly from being a product of a violent enviroment. But... there always cases that people simply don't know how to properly cope with such emotions, mostly because they never learned how. I guess I could of saved some room by asking which part of science you would like an explanation from.

harsh reality

Jun 14, 2010 7:07:53 AM

I have searched high and low for this answer. If you look at a previous post of mine, I have come to the conclusion, as harsh as it may sound, population control. Ultimately, we do have enough resources as a planet to feed everybody, whether this be through technology, farming, etc. I sat for weeks thinking this through. the answer I came to kinda killed a part of me. Hunger is a natural population control. Remember our parents yelling at us to quit eating them out of house and home? That is was would happen. If we feed everybody, this will stimulate the population growth resulting in more resources being used to house and feed even more people. Without the natural population control "Hunger", we would eat ourselves into extinction. This was a lot for me to wrap my head around at first. The big governments have the resources and means to do it, but in the end, it would doom us as a world.

bless you lacrimoso

Jun 14, 2010 7:24:06 AM

The funny thing about god, i found, is that there are always more questions than answers. Religous questions are always hard to answer, because most answers are based on doctrine and basic theology. All of which can be debated over and over again and still not come to a conclusion. First off, no such thing should ever happen to a child. Somebody took something from you that was never meant to be taken. From your later posts, I know that you are older now, but obviously, as is normal, is still a major question in your life. The only person to blame in all this is the person that did this. You did nothing wrong. I hope you can honestly say that to yourself. Secondly, you mentioned "free will" in a post of yours to another person answering your question. Maybe this free will brought you to this point to make a decision. You have the free will to let this go and be a survivor. By letting this go and helping others, you are not only enabling other violated children, but you are enabling yourself to be who you are. Maybe god had to put you through this to be the mentor and helper of others? Either way, the answer to this is within you and your beliefs. I hope you choose the road that helps you and others. My thoughts are with you.

contention

Apr 23, 2011 4:57:12 AM

People have long established through history the root of all religion. If you follow the timeline of Christianity for example, you will see that in the beginning there was only one religion. It then broke off to two which was the western and eastern rites. Now just going off the western rite branch, you will come across even more branches of where a reformed religion came about. The issue is not that these religions came about from the same root. This is a given. The issue was the ideology of the old ways which spurred somebody like Martin Luther to form a separate religion based on the foundation of the original, but with different ideologies. The same is with any religion past and present. They all have the same basic principles as to why they are there and what not. They are all right in their own intentions. The issue is being humble enough to accept other ideologies without contention.

I think...

We are all an accumulation of life experiences and genetics. Everyday, we are programmed through our sub-conscious by our experiences. Everyday, the genetic portion of our body programs us physically. Simply by you reading this, you are programming yourself to form an opinion based on what you already know. "Der Mensch lebt nicht vom Brot allein."
