Is duality real or illusion?

Feb 28, 2009 11:38:50 PM

Now we are getting somewhere, a debate is developing between the objective and subjective. Truth, facts, and reality are all facets of the same question, do we believe in the physical reality or is it all an illusion where the mind is supreme. I am reminded of a story where a group of intellectuals were debating the number of teeth in a horses mouth, (a very sophistacited debate) when a younger member of the group suggested that they go out and find a horse and count the teeth. For this he was soundly beaten and thrown out of the group for advocating such a debasing and vulgur course of action. He, of course, could not realize that the debate was not about real horses, but about the ideal number of teeth in an ideal Equus, that was what all the menial physical horses should aspire to be. However it was left to those base animals to bring the food that fuled the debate and the drink that lubricated the minds of those intellectuals. And believe me there is not enough wine or whisky to induce me to pursue this dialogue very far.

Love? Really?

Jun 22, 2009 5:49:32 AM

First of all what do you mean by 'Love'. the word has several definitions and different meanings. To love some people is difficult, such as those who are different than you. Some love is almost automatic, such as a parent for a child, it happens without any effort or difficulty at all. Sometimes the expression of 'Love' by a sick person can be somewhat distructive. Loving someone who is different, or strange, or unknown to you is hard untill you let yourself get to know them. Perhaps you mean 'acceptance' of those who are not like you. If you mean 'Love' as in 'Lust' that is a whole 'nother catagory.

I Think?

Sep 21, 2009 2:07:34 AM

Yes what about the mind, What is it? Is it more than just a manifestation of the neurological activity in the brain and nervous system? If it is super-neural, what is the relationship to the spirit and soul? If it is nothing more than just a result of neural activity, then when the body and brain die, so will the mind. If, on the other hand, it is more than a phenomenon based on electro-chemical activity in the brain it may continue after the body dies, and if it does what is the connection to the spirit and soul? Are they all one or do they procede seperately? Most probably they are connected and are aspects of the whole of our awareness, but how are they bound to the corporeal body? Most would say that when the body dies the spirit is released, but is this so? What if the spirit is bound to the body and is only slowly released as the body decomposes, and only when the physical body is reincorporated into the earth is the spirit free to its destiny? If this is so you should be careful how your remains are delt with after your death. There are many questions, but few answers, and be careful what some may claim to 'know' about the mind, spirit and soul.

In your last line "all life endlessly reoccurring cyclically within eternity." you seem to have mixed things up a bit. I was thinking that 'life' occured within the three dimentional, temporal realm and eternity was for those or that which has trancended duality and this life. Perhaps this is a time for a clear statement of terms as two people can often say the same thing in different ways or different things the same way. My dictionary is old and I understand that some words evolve to take on meanings that are much different that the original. So in regards to life and eternity, what are your thoughts?

Myth - ( 0 ) America - ( -1 )

Nov 25, 2009 10:46:07 PM

Mythology is Dead. Long live Mythology. I cannot speak for the Native Americans, I am not one of them. I cannot speak for other countries, I have not lived there. I can speak for the European interlopers who invaded and conquered North America, I am their Decendent. We have no Mythology that speaks to us or works for us, the old myths were left behind and we came here with nothing, No Mythology, No Religion, only the greed for riches or the quest for freedom. Some to avoid punishment, or to escape poverty, or oppression. For Mythology to work it must speak to the people, to speak there must be shared experience and a common understanding. Myths of Hunter Gatherers do not speak to ones living in a city. I thought perhaps books, art, or movies might be the new myth. 'Star Wars' was certainly based on mythological themes but set "A long time ago, in a Galaxy far away" there is little to relate to America. "Lord of the Rings" is another possability, but time and culture are too distant to work. "Close encounters of the 3rd kind" is very good. The Hero is from our own time, someone just like us. He receives a vision, goes on a quest, climbs a mountain (familiar mythical element), and meets beings that are not like us but give knowledge and wisdom. Just what we need, but it FAILS ! People go to see it in a theatre, strangers who do not know each other, the image is projected in front of them with no participation, and after the credits everyone is a Critic, "I liked that line", "I didn't like that scene", "Weren't the special effects good". It does not instill awe for the mystery of being. Poerty readings and concerts are much the same, we sit like lumps and do not participate. Native Americans understood Myth whether consciously or intuitively, Mythology must be experienced, not just read about. They lived and worked in groups and all participated in the ceremonies. Everyone is familiar with the image of the old man telling stories to young children. Everyone is familiar with the image of native Americans doing a ceremonial dance. These were part of the Mythology, acted out and everyone took part in some way. In America today Mythology has failed, the old myths do not relate to our culture. In America today Religion has failed, it is all about rules, fictional history, out of date science, and stories that do not relate. What may help is for people to gather in groups and participate in a mythical ceremony, one might be the Christian Eucharist, but that carries too much excess baggage. The closest thing to a comunity coming together is a Block Party, or a comunity yard sale, not much ceremony there. Mythologically America can be called a Vast Wasteland. With no connection to the Earth or the Cosmos it is no wonder that we are destroying the Earth. Hopefully we will not get the opportunity at the Cosmos.

I love metaphore.

Dec 13, 2009 2:18:28 AM

Love is a term that has been used a lot on this forum, much has been said about it and a few have tried to explain it. We are told to 'Love' others, but what does that mean? In Christian Rhetoric 'God is Love' and God is a metaphore for that which cannot be explained or expressed, then is 'Love' a metaphore for that which can only be experienced, and cannot be quantified or qualified. Both God and Love are within us all, to be experienced and felt, and conversly so are hate and bigotry metaphores for those inexplicable things within ourselves that are unacceptable, but are projected onto others. So love is an inexplicable feeling, What scientist could place a value on the feeling when you open a door and your Grandson runs to you, arms outstreached, with a big smile saying 'Grandpa' and only wants to be picked up and held? How do you define or quantify that? 'I Love You', Thou art That, I am You and You are Me, 'We are all in this together'. We share each other, and God?

Double Standard?

Jan 23, 2011 11:29:25 PM

You get on my case for correcting your hero, but another poster is slamed for not writing a proper sentence and now this one is wrong for creating an oxymoron. On top of that many of your examples are not, 'awful good' & 'terribly pleased' awful and terribly are used in place of 'very', common usage and not an oxymoron, their meanings in this context are complementary. 'Random Order', 'Criminal Justice', 'Even Odds', 'Ill Health', 'Jumbo Shrimp', Small Crowd', are all terms that are viable in their context. An Oxymoron is where the words used have opposite meanings in the context used. 'Student Teacher' is a person still studying to be a teacher but assigned to a classroom situation as a learning experience, sometimes called 'Practice Teaching', but either is acceptable. Perhaps you have been away from English too long and are out of practice. And the internet with it's world wide contribution is not a good place to keep up with common english usage. I think your use of the term 'Oxynoron' is 'clearly misunderstood', meaning 'it;s obvious you don't understand'.
