Recycle Your Cell-Phone, Save a Gorilla
 |
| Adopt a gorilla at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International |
Zoo Atlanta and The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International are working together with a company called Eco-Cell to recycle cell phones, help the environment and raise money for gorilla conservation. Cell phones and other electronics contain a number of hazardous substances that can have a serious impact on the environment. Donating your phone and having it recycled will ensure that they will be reused or properly recycled. For each cell phone received, a donation will be made to The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.
The Zoo’s conservation project website explains:
“Cell phones also have had a direct effect on wild populations of gorillas. A critical component of cell phones and other small electronics is a substance called coltan. One of the few places in the world where coltan is found is the forests of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo—right in the middle of gorilla habitat. As a result of mining for coltan, critical habitat has been destroyed and gorillas have been displaced or even killed by poachers. By recycling your phone with Zoo Atlanta, you will be helping to raise money that will go directly to help these populations of gorillas. First, donations to The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International will help further their work to protect gorillas. Second, the reuse of cell phones results in the need for fewer new ones, which in turn reduces the need for coltan mining.”
Some of the phones collected by Eco-Cell will go to charities that need them for emergency 911 use. Others will be recycled because they are no longer usable. But the majority will be refurbished and resold to first-time, low-income users in areas outside the US with compatible cell phone technology.
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, now
The Gorilla Organization, is a non-for-profit organization committed to gorilla protection, science, field research, education and awareness, and economic development. The gorilla community was strongly affected by the conflicts in war-stricken Rwanda and the DRC. The organization is working together with both countries’ governments to conserve their gorilla communities.
On September 24, the organization held the charity event ‘The Great Gorilla Run’ in the City of London, where 650 people ran 7 km dressed in full gorilla suits in order to raise funds.

How nice it is that you are so CONCERNED with recycling cell phones to save the gorillas! And if yur efforts make at least a small glimmer of hope, it will have been worth it. Especially since every week the cell companies are coming up with a new chocolate phone or cotton candy phone,,and everyone has to consumer up to the jones’s. Seems to me your eforts will be plummeted to less than noticable and you should be spending more time eliminating the need for coltan all together. Even if it means we need to get rid of the electronic devices altogether. Ask yourself this..Do you want cell phones? Or do you want natural habitat and ecosystems…My guess is your looking at your wallet and wondering what natural habitat will do for you…So no, your feighning tree hugging recycling attempts are not even close to what it takes to even be slightly concerned about this problem. You should get your heads on straight and get a clue about the real problem….before it’s too late. Somehow I doubt that will EVER happen on this earth…By the time enough people will have figured it out, we’ll be living on a Mars like planet and the $ will have absolutely no value anyway…Enjoy yur greedy little existence while you can. Oh, and here’s some advice, don’t go preaching about your recycling attempts and endeavors to save the eco-system…It’s obvious you won’t do a thing to stop the cause…

I think that’s a great idea. At least you’re trying to do something, unlike her, who just sits there, drowning herself in her bitter little world. If she’s so good then, why doesn’t she stop cellphone companies, right? This is a great post. I appreciate it.

I have been using a local electronics recycler called E-Tech Recycling. They recycle all types of electronics such as computers, TV, Printers, fax etc. I think it is really good for the environment to recycle electronics since there are so many harmful chemicals in them. For information about E-Tech visit them at www.etechrecycling.com
